What is your role/position in the IDA program?
I am coordinator of the international traineeship. In addition, I supervise students with their First Year Paper, Master thesis, and other internal traineeships.
How long have you been teaching?
I started teaching (statistics) when I was a bachelor student, 10 years ago. I’ve been a teacher in the IDA program since 2019.
What do you like about teaching?
I especially enjoy seeing students learn new skills and get excited about a topic, I also like it when students ask surprising questions that give me a new perspective on my own research.
What is the most fascinating about human beings to you?
I think it is fascinating that peoples’ personalities can change across the entire lifespan. We still have not figured out what exactly triggers these changes, I hope that my research on life transitions and social relationships will provide some answers to this question in the future.
What is a collaborative project that you liked and worked with an IDA student on?
I love the project I’m doing together with Lisa Vos and Jaap Denissen, we are working on turning her First Year Paper on personality and relationship dissolution into a publication. I very much enjoy figuring out the best statistical model to test our research question (we combine survival analysis with an actor- partner- interdependence model).
How are you experiencing the teacher-student relationship in the IDA program?
I enjoy the one-on-one meetings with the students!
If you are not teaching or doing research, what else do you like doing in your personal time?
I love to sing (especially while driving my car). Before the pandemic I spent a lot of my personal time hanging out with friends at a small bar I have in my house. A new hobby that I just started is standup paddle boarding, I live next to a lake so I’m looking forward to being on the water all summer!
Is there anything we missed and you would like to share?
I am Early Career Representative at the European Association of Personality Psychology (EAPP). Next to the big European Conference of Personality (ECP, Madrid 2022), we have many other initiatives, like travel grants, a Facebook group, a mentoring program, and a podcast: https://personalitypsychologypodcast.com/. If you want to know more about EAPP, you can go to the website https://eapp.org/ or send me an email (earlycareer@eapp.org).
