Meet Sophie van Lieshout!

Why did you decide to do the IDA Master?

The thing that sparked my interest in the IDA master was the opportunity to explore your research interests. There is a lot of room to become acquainted with a great variety of research fields, allowing you to see what suits you best.

Looking at the program schedule, which course excites you the most and why?

I am very excited about the programming course although it also scares me a little bit. But challenge is good, which is why I look forward to this course.

Do you experience stress/pressure in your studies? How do you deal with it?

Yes, I definitely experience stress in my studies. The courses are very intense and demand a lot of my time, but they are all very interesting and I have already learned a lot. To be honest, I am still learning how to best deal with the stress, but it does help me a lot to keep an eye on the bigger picture and to keep in mind what I am doing it all for. However, I must admit that I am an easily stressed person in general, so I doubt that I will ever really learn how to handle stress.

What motivates you to keep studying?

I am very excited about being able to develop my own research questions and investigating the topics that most excite me. This motivates me to keep studying because I know that the skills I am learning are the building blocks necessary to achieve this goal. On top of that, all courses are very exciting, which is also a big motivator.

How are you experiencing the relationship with your teachers?

The relationship between students and teachers is very good. When I was still in the orienting phase for choosing a master’s program, I read about this program on this blog and I read all about the positive experiences with the student-teacher relationships. I can now confirm that this is true. Teachers are very thoughtful and passionate and want to bring out the best in you.
