What is your role/position in the IDA program?

Coordinator of the Master’s thesis.

How long have you been teaching?

First year in this program, 20 years in Tilburg (HR Studies), before that 5 years in Nijmegen (HRD & Vocational Education).

What do you like about teaching?

Being able to share my expertise with students for their professional development and personal growth.

What is the reason you became a researcher?

I want to understand how things (especially around employee learning) work, why they are like they are, and how they can be improved.

What is the most fascinating about human beings to you?

How much they differ.

Are there times where you doubt researching or university?

Not researching, but I’ve had a few years where this university was not a helpful environment.

What makes IDA students unique?

They really want to know how things work.

If you could change something in the university setting what would you change?

Get rid of the rigid focus on number of high-impact publications, number of big grants acquired, and positive student evaluations.

What advice would you give future IDA students?

Good is good enough.

What is a collaborative project that you liked and worked with an IDA student on?

So far I’m supervising two internal traineeships, one around qualitative research methods and one around learning & development, both of which are really nice to help students with.

How are you experiencing the teacher-student relationship in the IDA program?

Personal, inspiring.

If you are not teaching or doing research, what else do you like doing in your personal time?

Go to rock concerts, play volleyball, chill in the sauna, walking and cycling.

Is there anything we missed and you would like to share? This can also be something personal e.g. a motto.

I really cannot understand why qualitative research is not allowed within IDA.
